Motorola’s Android Will Be Cheaper, Better Looking than the G1

HTC hasn’t even launched its G1 Android, the presumed Apple iPhone 3G killer and Motorola already let some of its similar plans leak to the media: the company plans to make an Android-based smartphone that will presumably be the G1 Dream killer.

According to rumors which exploded on the Webosphere, Motorola’s Android will also feature a large touch screen, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, but it will look higher end and will be about $30 cheaper.

The latest news on this new product is the low price. We were already aware of the fact that Motorola’s Android-based phone will offer access to social networking services. The news was confirmed by BusinessWeek which also reported that the new device will use a similar design language as the recently announced Motorola Krave ZN4.

HTC will sell its G1 at the price of $180 after rebates with a new contract, while Motorola’s Android-based phone will be available for $150. The network Motorola will pick is not known yet, but it is highly probable that it will choose GSM-based networking technologies for its device.

Motorola has reportedly allocated a budget of USD 50 million to develop its Android. However, if the news stirred the enthusiasm in you, calm down. Motorola won’t launch the new handset until sometime in the second quarter of 2009. It is not sure whether Motorola will launch the Android phone six months after HTC launches the G1 because it started working on it later or because it’s taking its time to make sure things work out as planed.

However, given the fact that Motorola has said very little about its Android phone, many industry analysts raised an eyebrow when the discussion focused on the possibility that the new handset might successfully compete with T-Mobile HTC G1 Dream, Nokia’s 5800 and the rest of the big league players.

Android Mania Reaches Motorola

With the iPhone king of the touchscreen phone hill and the much expected launch of HTC’s G1, Motorola joins the fun and announces that it will embark on a project that will use the Android operating system on one of their phones. Motorola said the new phone, which doesn’t have a name yet, will have a touch screen like the iPhone and a slide-out Qwerty keyboard like the G1. Motorola also said that the phone itself will be focusing on social networking systems like MySpace and Facebook. This means that the phone’s software will allow users to access their accounts even easier than it is on other similar devices.

To build a “social networking phone” isn’t a bad idea, but, on the other hand, it’s not brilliant either. Motorola is now hiring a team of up to 350 people to work on the new Android based cell phone. Also, it is said that Motorola will invest $50 million in this project and that the first phone is expected to appear on the second quarter of next year. Motorola has already entered the market of touchscreen cell phones, with the Motorola Krave, a reliable and good looking piece of device. On the other hand, maybe the competition for the ultimate touch screen phone is already over as G1 will be released in a short time, the iPhone 3G already dominating the markets and the upcoming Blackberry Storm will definitely present itself as a pleasant surprise.

Motorola’s recently announced, Android based, touchscreen cell phone is expected to be even cheaper than the G1, under $180 and to be a serious competitor to other similar devices.

Apple NVIDIA's GeForce 9400 M

Apple has tapped NVIDIA's new GeForce 9400 M as the base graphics for its new MacBook, MacBook Pro, and updated MacBook Air, which Steve Jobs himself says is five times faster than the current Intel integrated graphics they've been using. That's aided in no small part by the chipset's 16 parallel graphics cores, not to mention a generally beefier GPU that occupies a full 70% of the die area. If that's not enough for you, Apple is also throwing NVIDIA's 9600M GT into the MacBook Pro, which'll give you two GPUs and either 256MB or 512MB of memory. That power will unsurprisingly come at the expense of some battery life, however, with the 9600 cutting things back to four hours from the five hours you can expect with the discrete GPU switched off. In the Q&A after the announcement, Apple also confirmed that it'd be the first taking the chipset to market, but that anything further is up to NVIDIA. Expect to hear more about that tomorrow, when NVIDIA is supposedly making its own announcement.- Source
